Samstag Schule Christmas Party
Saturday, December 11, 10:30 a.m.
First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, Harwood and Young streets

December 11 marks the end of another successful semester at the DGC’s German Language Saturday School of Dallas. The number students at both locations-- down-town and Richardson -- remains steady at last year’s levels.   This speaks highly for our school and the quality of our teachers, especially considering today’s economic situation.   Our second semester begins in January 2011 and, as always, we look forward to welcoming new students!   Please let your friends and neighbors know that we will accepting applications for January enrollment.

Last spring some of the junior high and all of the high school students took AATG exams (Association of American Teachers German).   All students passed the various levels. We will administer the same test this coming spring semester.   In addition, we have been accepted and received permission from the German Language Advisor of the German Consulate General the Federal Republic of Germany to invite our high school students to take the DSD 1 and possibly the DSD 2 (Deutsches Sprach Diplom).   Students who pass these difficult eight-hour examinations administered by representatives of that office will have the opportunity to attend universities in German speaking countries without prior German language certification.   Whether students will indeed study in Europe or not, our students would have flexibility to do so and simply passing these examinations will be an honor they can list on their applications to U.S. colleges and universities.

On Saturday, December 11, the last day of school, at 10:30 a.m., teachers and students will celebrate the end of the semester and the joy of Christmas.   The celebration will be held at the downtown location but is for students and teachers of both schools.   The children will sing German Christmas songs, Santa will hopefully find his way to us, and it would be wonderful if you could join us too to sing O Tannenbaum with us.   The location is the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas at Harwood and Young streets.   Enter the parking garage on Park Avenue.

The German Language School is an organizational part of the Dallas Goethe Center and offers German language courses for children and adults at various levels.   The current enrollment is about one hundred students.   The school year is divided into three semesters.   All classes offer open admission at any time during the semester.   All instructors are native German speakers with academic backgrounds and teaching experience.   Children receive quality education with two hours of instruction each week.   However, this cannot take the place of a regular German school.   Children from four to fifteen years can join any class that is suitable for their age.   Our youngest students, starting at age 4, learn through games, fairytales and songs, while our older students are taught by a curriculum developed especially for German Language Schools.   If they already know some German, the instructors will make every effort to place students together with others on an equal level.   Older students also have the choice to attend any of the Adult classes.   Classes for children generally have five to eight students per teacher with no more than six for the smallest children.

The adult section consists of five levels, Beginning, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2.   Maximum size for adult classes is eight students. Students decide when to advance to the next higher level.   The Intermediate classes focus on German grammar and its usage in conversation as well as the understanding of written texts.  In the Advanced 1 class, students discuss short stories and newspaper articles in German.  The Advanced 2 class uses German literary texts for discussions.   All Adult classes are held in German as much as possible.   Please contact Gisela De Marco (972) 416-3421 for more detailed information on all courses; this will help prospective students to evaluate the course contents and decide if these satisfy their particular needs.

Adults become familiar with German manners and customs in everyday life, children enjoy hearing about German traditions and holiday customs.   St Martin's Fest (parade) in November, and the visit by St. Nikolaus (Santa Claus) in December let students experience the joy of German holidays even though they are in Texas.   Parents and friends come and join in these festivities, all of which makes learning German fun!   Please contact Ulrike Hollingsworth (817-261-5641) for additional details.
